The Valero Alamo Bowl is one of the better college football bowl games, and San Antonio is one of the cheaper big cities in Texas. That combination means you can actually attend a bowl game without draining your savings. The Alamodome holds about 65,000 fans, the River Walk is right there, and the tacos are some of the best in the country.
Here's what it actually costs and how to keep it low.

Budget Hotels Near the Alamodome
San Antonio hotel prices near the Alamodome start around $57/night for a 2-star and $58/night for a 3-star. That's during a normal week — expect a bump of 20-40% around game day since two college fan bases flood the city.
The Red Roof PLUS+ San Antonio Downtown - Riverwalk regularly posts the lowest rates in the area, starting around $53/night on non-event dates. Book at least 3-4 weeks out to lock in something reasonable.
If you're flexible on location, hotels near the airport or along I-35 drop to the $45-55 range even during bowl week.

Budget Food & Restaurants
San Antonio is a budget eater's paradise. You can eat extremely well for under $10 a meal.
-
Rolando's Super Tacos (919 W Hildebrand Ave) — Massive super tacos for $5-7. The portions are almost comically large. Breakfast tacos start around $2.95. Cash-friendly, always packed, worth the wait.
-
Taquitos West Ave (2818 West Ave) — Authentic Jalisco-style street tacos. Most tacos run $2-3 each. Get the al pastor (Thursday-Sunday only). One of the highest-rated cheap taco spots in San Antonio.
-
Bill Miller Bar-B-Q (multiple locations, including 101 W Commerce St downtown) — A San Antonio institution. A Poor Boy combo (sandwich, fries, large tea) is $6.29. Regular BBQ plate with a drink runs $7.75. No frills, just solid Texas BBQ at fast-food prices.
-
Aldaco's at Sunset Station (1305 E Commerce St) — Right near the Alamodome. Enchilada and chalupa plates run $11-14. Slightly more than the taco joints but the location can't be beat for game day.
Parking
Parking at the Alamodome changed in 2024. The city raised premium parking fees, and rates now range from $10 to $60 depending on the event. The Alamodome is now cashless — credit cards only.
Here's the thing: Alamodome parking often requires a pre-purchased permit for big events like the Alamo Bowl. There are no game-day sales. If you miss the window, you're stuck with downtown garages at $15-30. Book garage parking in advance through SpotHero or ParkWhiz to lock in lower rates. You can also use ParkMobile for metered street parking around downtown.
The smart move is VIA Park & Ride. VIA Metropolitan Transit runs special event buses from four locations directly to the Alamodome's north entrance. Round-trip cost: $2.60 ($1.30 each way). Free parking at all Park & Ride lots.
2025 Park & Ride locations (expect similar for 2026):
- Crossroads Mall (151 Crossroads Blvd) — 16 min from Alamodome
- Frost Bank Center Lot 1 — 12 min from Alamodome
- Stone Oak (US 281 & Stone Oak Pkwy) — 22 min from Alamodome
- Brooks Transit Center (SE Military & I-37) — 12 min from Alamodome
Download the VIA goMobile+ app to pay. Buy two $1.30 fares — each is valid for 2.5 hours after activation.
Weather
Late December in San Antonio is mild compared to most of the country.
- Average high: 63°F (17°C)
- Average low: 41°F (5°C)
- Rain chance: ~18% on any given day
- Rainfall: 0.4-2.5 inches for the month
You'll want a medium jacket for the evening game and maybe a light layer underneath. Rain is unlikely but possible — a packable rain jacket takes up no space. The Alamodome is a dome, so once you're inside, weather doesn't matter.
Safety & Risks
-
Surge pricing: Uber and Lyft prices spike hard after the game. 65,000 people leaving at once will do that. If you're not using Park & Ride, request your ride 5-10 minutes before the final whistle or be prepared to wait 30-45 minutes.
-
Ticket scams: Only buy from official sources (alamobowl.com, Ticketmaster) or reputable resale platforms (SeatGeek, StubHub). Avoid random sellers outside the Alamodome — counterfeit tickets are common at bowl games.
-
Downtown at night: The River Walk and Alamodome areas are well-patrolled and generally safe. Stick to lit, populated areas. Don't leave valuables visible in your car — downtown garage break-ins happen.
-
Cashless venue: The Alamodome is fully cashless. Bring a card or use mobile pay. If you only carry cash, there are card-loading kiosks inside, but the lines are long.
Best Neighborhoods to Stay In
San Antonio is spread out, but for the Alamo Bowl you want to be near downtown. Here is how the neighborhoods break down.
- Downtown / River Walk area: The most convenient location. Walk to the Alamodome in 10-15 minutes. Hotels range from $57-120/night depending on the property and how far in advance you book. The River Walk is right outside your door for pre-game and post-game dining and drinks.
- Southtown / King William: Just south of downtown, this artsy neighborhood has boutique hotels and Airbnbs from $70-100/night. A 10-minute walk to the Alamodome. Great breakfast spots like Guenther House and local coffee shops.
- Near the airport (US-281 / Loop 410): Budget chains from $45-65/night. Free parking at every hotel. You are 15 minutes from the Alamodome by car. The Stone Oak Park & Ride is in this corridor, making transit easy.
- Along I-35 (north or south): The cheapest option at $40-55/night. Hotels here are basic but functional. South I-35 near Brooks Transit Center puts you on a direct Park & Ride bus to the Alamodome for $1.30.
Game Day Timeline
The Alamo Bowl kicks off in the evening, which gives you a full day in San Antonio. Here is how to structure it.
- Morning: Sleep in or grab breakfast tacos. San Antonio breakfast tacos are legendary and cheap — most spots charge $2-4 per taco. Pete's Tako House (502 Brooklyn Ave) is a local favorite near downtown.
- Late morning / early afternoon: Visit the Alamo (free admission) or walk the River Walk. Both are within 15 minutes of the Alamodome. The Alamo is a quick visit — 30-45 minutes is enough. The River Walk can take an hour or three depending on how far you stroll.
- 3-4 hours before kickoff: Head to the Alamo Bowl Fan Zone. This free pre-game event usually sets up near the Alamodome with live music, food vendors, sponsor giveaways, and college pep rallies. A good way to get into the game-day spirit without spending money.
- 2 hours before kickoff: Enter the Alamodome. Lines at the gates build in the last hour before kickoff. Getting in early means shorter concession lines, better pregame atmosphere, and time to find your seat.
- After the game: If you used Park & Ride, buses start running immediately after the final whistle. If you are walking back to a downtown hotel, the River Walk is well-lit and safe for the 10-15 minute walk.
Ticket Buying Strategy
Alamo Bowl tickets are among the more affordable bowl game tickets. Here is how to get the best deal.
- Face value tickets ($50-500): Available through alamobowl.com and Ticketmaster. Lower-bowl sideline seats are the priciest. Upper-level end zone seats start around $50-75.
- Secondary market: Resale prices on SeatGeek and StubHub often drop below face value for bowl games. The Alamo Bowl rarely sells out its full 65,000 capacity, which means supply exceeds demand on the secondary market. Check prices 3-5 days before the game — sellers get desperate and drop prices.
- Day-of deals: If you are flexible, tickets on the secondary market can drop to $25-35 on game day. Sellers with unsold inventory would rather get something than nothing. This is a gamble, but it works for bowl games more often than regular season.
- Student sections: If one of the participating schools is your alma mater, check with the university's ticket office. Alumni often get access to discounted tickets in the school's allotment.
The River Walk: A Free Attraction
The San Antonio River Walk is one of the best free things to do in any American city, and it is especially beautiful during the holidays.
- Holiday lights: The River Walk is decorated with over 100,000 lights from late November through early January. The lights reflect off the river and create a stunning atmosphere. Completely free to walk and enjoy.
- Length: The main River Walk loop is about 2.5 miles. You can walk the entire thing in an hour at a casual pace. It runs below street level along the San Antonio River, lined with restaurants, bars, and shops.
- Budget dining on the River Walk: Most River Walk restaurants are tourist-priced ($18-30 entrees), but some are reasonable. Casa Rio (on the River Walk since 1946) has combo plates starting at $13. Or just grab a drink at one of the bars and soak in the atmosphere — draft beers run $5-7.
- Boat tours: Rio San Antonio Cruises offers 35-minute narrated boat tours for $15 per adult. Worth doing once, especially to see the holiday lights from the water.
San Antonio on a Budget: Beyond the Bowl
If you are making a multi-day trip, San Antonio has plenty of cheap or free things to do.
- The Alamo: Free admission. Texas's most famous landmark. Small but historically significant. Plan 30-60 minutes.
- San Antonio Missions National Historical Park: Four 18th-century Spanish missions (besides the Alamo) are preserved as a National Park. Free admission. Mission San Jose is the largest and most impressive.
- Pearl District: A redeveloped brewery complex north of downtown. Free to walk around. Saturday morning farmers market (9 AM-1 PM) has free samples and local food vendors with items from $3-8.
- Japanese Tea Garden: A beautiful public garden built in a former quarry. Free admission. 15 minutes from downtown near Brackenridge Park.
- Market Square (El Mercado): The largest Mexican market in the US outside of Mexico. Free to browse. Shops sell crafts, clothing, and souvenirs. The restaurants inside have plates from $8-14.
