Hotels near the Anschutz Medical Campus (UCHealth and Children's Colorado) for visiting families

1The situation

Someone you love is at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital or Children's Hospital Colorado on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora — the region's trauma, transplant and children's centre, where people are sent from all over Colorado, Wyoming and the Plains — and you need a bed nearby for an unknown number of nights. The hotels you can walk to from the hospital are a Hyatt Regency, a SpringHill Suites and a Hyatt House on East Colfax, priced at $130-220 a night for medical visitors and conference guests. What is not expensive, contrary to what almost everyone assumes, is the parking: Anschutz visitor parking is $1 an hour with a daily maximum of $8, and a flat $1 after 4pm and all weekend. So the campus is the cheap place to leave the car, and the room is the line item to attack. What you want is a clean room 10-15 minutes away by car with free parking, and the campus lots for the hours you are actually at the bedside.

2What you actually need

  1. Minutes door-to-door at any hour, not 'walking distance'

The campus sits at Colfax and I-225 with its own exits. From the Alameda/Mississippi/Iliff hotels on I-225 it is a 10-minute drive to the UCHealth or Children's entrances at 3am and 15-20 in rush hour; from the Quebec Street and Stapleton chains it is 12-15 minutes along I-70 and I-225 or surface streets. That is close enough, and it is $60-120 a night cheaper than the Colfax frontage.

  2. A genuinely 24-hour front desk

Hospital visits don't keep hotel hours. You may check in at midnight after a long day, or need a key re-cut at 5am. Chain properties generally staff the desk overnight; some of the cheaper independents and motor inns do not. Confirm before you book.

  3. Free parking — and check what the hospital garages charge

UCHealth and Children's Colorado use paid visitor garages (daily rates and validation policies change — ask at the information desk for the current rate and whether multi-day or family passes exist). A Colfax hotel with paid parking adds more on top. A free hotel lot on I-225 or Quebec Street saves $100-250 over a week.

  4. A fridge and microwave in the room

Cafeterias close, you'll bring food back, and some medications need refrigeration. Most of the chains below have both; the extended-stay properties have a full kitchen. Ask for a room with a fridge when you book.

  5. Week-rate flexibility and the hospital's own hotel list

Both UCHealth and Children's Colorado have patient and family services teams that keep lists of nearby hotels offering a discounted medical rate, and Children's has family lodging programmes for some patients. Ask them before booking — do not assume any hotel or rate. Then ask the hotel whether you can extend night by night without re-booking at a higher price.

3The shortlist5 hotels, cheapest first

Each hotel is here because it meets the requirements above — not because of its star rating. Prices are nightly rates before tax for the default dates; volatile facts (shuttles, parking terms) are stated as what to confirm, not as promises.

4Practical logistics

UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital
12605 E 16th Ave, Aurora, on the Anschutz campus at Colfax and I-225. Visitor parking is any lot signed 'Patient and Visitor Parking', plus meters. The published campus rate is $1.00 per hour up to 8 hours with a daily maximum of $8.00; meters are 25 cents per 15 minutes with a 4-hour maximum. Evenings after 4pm and weekends and campus holidays are a flat $1.00. Automated pay stations take cash up to a $5 note and Visa, MasterCard or Discover, or you can pay through Parkmobile (which adds a 35-cent transaction fee).
Children's Hospital Colorado
13123 E 16th Ave, Aurora, next door on the same campus and covered by the same campus visitor parking rates — $8 daily maximum, $1 flat after 4pm and at weekends. Ask the family services desk about family-lodging programmes before you book a hotel; that is where the real money is, not the garage.
Drive time from the budget clusters
From the I-225 strip at Alameda, Mississippi or Iliff, roughly 10 minutes outside rush hour and 15-20 in it. From the Quebec Street / Stapleton chains, 12-15 minutes via I-70 and I-225 or Montview Boulevard. Allow extra time in snow.
Public transport
The RTD R-Line light rail stops at Fitzsimons station on the campus edge and runs south along I-225 past the Iliff and Florida hotel clusters; the Colfax 15/15L bus runs along the campus frontage. Useful in daylight; drive or ride-share at night.
Medical rates
Ask UCHealth or Children's Colorado patient and family services whether they keep a list of partner hotels. Rates and participating hotels change; confirm directly with the hotel and mention the hospital when you book.
Food near the campus
The campus has cafeterias and a few cafes that close in the evening; East Colfax outside the gates has chain and fast-food options. Every hotel below is within a mile or two of a King Soopers or Safeway.
What a week actually costs to park
Seven days of daytime visits at the $8 maximum is $56. If your visiting hours are mostly evenings and weekends at the $1 flat rate, it is closer to $10 for the week. Either way it is a rounding error next to the difference between a $180 hotel on Colfax and a $95 one ten minutes down I-225 — which is $595 over the same week. Spend your attention on the room rate.

Prices and schedules change. Treat figures as ranges and check before booking.

5What to avoid

  • The hotel 'on the hospital campus' or across Colfax from it unless someone else is paying — $130-220 a night, routinely $60-120 a night more than a clean chain 10 minutes down I-225, and the parking saving you think you are buying is worth $8 a day.
  • Booking one night at a time on a booking site. Rates move daily; if you know you'll be here a week, ask the hotel directly for a weekly or medical rate and whether you can extend without re-booking.
  • Paying a premium for a hotel across Colfax to avoid the hospital garage. The garage is $8 a day at most and $1 in the evenings and at weekends; the hotel premium is $60-120 a night. This is the single most common mistake on this page and it runs the wrong way round.
  • Motor inns with a desk that closes at night, however cheap. Confirm 24-hour staffing before you book if you'll be coming and going at odd hours.
  • Staying downtown or at the airport 'because it's Denver'. Both are 25-40 minutes from the campus in traffic and add $20-45 parking downtown; the I-225 and Quebec Street clusters are closer and cheaper.

6Book

Use the rate links on each hotel above. If a hotel's value depends on a named package (park & cruise, shuttle), confirm the package with the hotel before you pay — packages are usually direct-booking rate codes, not OTA rooms.
