Austin calls itself one of the most dog-friendly cities in the country, and most of its budget hotels will take your dog — for a fee. The fee is the problem: '$25 pet fee' on a listing is often $25 per night, per pet, which turns a $79 room into $104 and a week into an extra $175. Two brands have historically taken a pet at no charge: Motel 6 (pets free, and BringFido lists two pets of any size at no fee at the Austin properties) and Red Roof (one pet free, up to 80 lb). Studio 6 usually gets lumped in with them, but the Austin Midtown property's listing shows $10 per day capped at $50 per stay — cheap, but not free, so it is off this list. Policies change by franchise and by year, and one Austin Motel 6's own listing even says pets are not allowed, so every line below needs a phone call before you book.

'Pet fee $25' tells you nothing. Ask: is it per night or per stay, per pet or per room, and is any of it refundable? Write the answer down with the name of the person who told you.
Weight and number limits
Free-pet brands usually allow one pet per room and some franchises cap weight at 50-80 lb. Two dogs or a big dog may mean a second room or a fee.
A ground-floor or exterior-corridor room
Three trips outside a day are easier from a ground-floor room with a door to the parking lot. The older motor-inn layouts (Motel 6, Red Roof, Studio 6) are built this way; ask for a ground-floor room at booking.
Somewhere to walk the dog
The I-35 frontage road is not a walk. Hotels near Lady Bird Lake's trail, South Congress or a neighbourhood park make the week much easier for both of you.
