Where to stay the night before a cruise from Cape Liberty

Verification pending — confirm directly with the hotel

1The situation

Every cruise line says the same thing: arrive the day before. For Cape Liberty that advice matters more than most. Newark airport delays are routine, the Turnpike and the Holland Tunnel both jam on weekday mornings, and there is no hotel at the pier to fall back on. So you need one night within 20-30 minutes of Bayonne where the check-out time and the morning routine fit your boarding window. The choice is really between four clusters — Bayonne, the Jersey City waterfront, the Newark airport strip and Staten Island — and the right one depends on whether you're flying or driving, and whether you want a New York evening or an early night.

2What you actually need

  1. Minutes to the pier, not miles to Manhattan

Bayonne hotels are 5-10 minutes from the terminal gate. Jersey City waterfront and Staten Island are 15-25. Newark airport is 20-30. Manhattan is 45-90 depending on the tunnel. Listings that say 'minutes from New York' are telling you the wrong distance.

  2. Check-out time vs your boarding window

An 11am check-out and a 1pm arrival window means two hours with luggage. Look for noon check-out or a hotel that holds bags and runs a later shuttle.

  3. A real plan for the airport leg

If you're flying into EWR, an airport-strip hotel with a free airport shuttle saves a $40-60 taxi and absorbs a late flight. If you're driving, you don't need the airport at all — go to Bayonne or Staten Island instead.

  4. Breakfast that doesn't cost $25 a head

Included breakfast is worth $15-25 per person in this part of the world. Jersey City waterfront hotels mostly charge for it; airport and Staten Island chains mostly include it.

3The shortlist7 hotels, cheapest first

Each hotel is here because it meets the requirements above — not because of its star rating. Prices are nightly rates before tax for the default dates; volatile facts (shuttles, parking terms) are stated as what to confirm, not as promises.

5.Sonesta Simply Suites Jersey City

7 mi from Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal · 21 2nd St, Jersey City, NJ 07302

2.5-star

The value pick on the Jersey City waterfront for families who'd rather cook than pay for breakfast: full kitchens with dishwashers, and self-parking about $25 a day with in/out privileges rather than the $30-50 this cluster is usually quoted at. PATH to Manhattan for the evening, 15-25 minutes to the pier by rideshare. Note it is now a Sonesta, not a Candlewood — the property was rebranded in 2026 and refurbished, so older IHG reviews and rates do not apply.

Parking
Self-parking about $25 per day with in/out privileges. No cruise-length parking — confirm directly with the hotel.
Shuttle
No pier or airport shuttle; plan on a $20-35 rideshare to Cape Liberty.

6.Courtyard by Marriott Jersey City Newport

7.5 mi from Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal · 540 Washington Blvd, Jersey City, NJ 07310

3-star

A solid fly-in night-before base with a Manhattan evening on the PATH and an indoor pool. Breakfast is not included — the Bistro charges roughly $4-25 a head — and self-parking is about $27 a day with in/out privileges. No cruise parking and no port shuttle, so budget the rideshare and leave the car at home.

No pier or airport shuttle; plan on a $20-35 rideshare to Cape Liberty.

7.Hyatt House Jersey City

7 mi from Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal · 1 Exchange Pl, Jersey City, NJ 07302

3-star

The fly-in cruiser's Manhattan-evening option without the Manhattan trap: PATH to the city for dinner from Exchange Place next door, a complimentary buffet breakfast, kitchenettes in every suite, and a 15-25 minute rideshare to the pier in the morning. Parking is an off-site garage across the road at about $27 a night, cheaper than this cluster's reputation but with no cruise-length option — so still not one for leaving a car.

4Practical logistics

Bayonne itself
There is no operating hotel in Bayonne. A 125-room hotel was approved in 2026 as part of the three-building development at 1 Lefante Way on the South Cove redevelopment, but no construction timeline has been announced. Until it opens, the closest beds to the pier are on Staten Island and the Elizabeth airport strip, both about 20 minutes away.
Jersey City waterfront (Newport / Exchange Place)
6-7 miles, 15-25 minutes. PATH train to Manhattan for a pre-cruise evening. Parking is a paid garage — the sourced rates are about $25-27 a night at the three hotels here, cheaper than the $30-50 often quoted — and breakfast is included at some and charged at others. No cruise parking and no port shuttle anywhere in this cluster.
Newark airport strip (Elizabeth)
About 10 miles by road, 20-30 minutes. Free EWR shuttles, big lots and included breakfast at most chains, and the only cluster where a complimentary Cape Liberty shuttle is repeatedly documented. Hotel parking here is not automatically free: the Hampton Inn & Suites is quoted at $20 a night and the Courtyard around $10-14.
Staten Island (South Avenue / Teleport area)
Across the Bayonne Bridge, about 20 minutes. Free guest parking and included breakfast at the two South Avenue chains; neither has a pool, and there is nothing walkable. Quiet and suburban, and the cruise shuttle is tied to a park/stay/cruise booking rather than offered to every guest.
Manhattan
45-90 minutes via the Holland Tunnel on a weekday morning, parking $50-80 per night. Stay there after the cruise if you want the city; not the night before.

Prices and schedules change. Treat figures as ranges and check before booking.

5What to avoid

  • Booking Manhattan for the night before. The room costs more, the car costs $50-80 to park, and embarkation morning through the Holland Tunnel is the one traffic jam you can't afford.
  • Arriving at EWR the same morning as the sailing. A one-hour flight delay plus the Turnpike is enough to miss the ship. The night-before room is insurance, not a luxury.
  • Jersey City waterfront hotels booked without checking the parking rate and the breakfast charge. The room looks competitive until $40 parking and $25 breakfast land on the bill.
  • Checking in late and expecting a shuttle seat the next morning without having reserved it.

6Book

Use the rate links on each hotel above. If a hotel's value depends on a named package (park & cruise, shuttle), confirm the package with the hotel before you pay — packages are usually direct-booking rate codes, not OTA rooms.
