Carnival's advice is arrive the day before, and in Los Angeles that isn't caution, it's arithmetic: a delayed flight into LAX plus the 405 at the wrong hour is enough to miss a ship. So you need one night close to the terminal where the morning routine fits your check-in window. Early check-in doesn't matter. A late-ish check-out, somewhere to hold bags, and a short run to Windsor Way do. The choice is between the Queensway Bay hotels next to the terminal (walk to the ship, paid parking), downtown Pine Avenue (dinner and a drink the night before, a 5-minute ride in the morning), and the airport corridor or Seal Beach (cheaper, free guest parking, a 20-minute ride).
2What you actually need
Distance to Windsor Way in minutes, not miles
Queensway Drive is a 10-minute walk. Pine Avenue and Ocean Boulevard are 5-10 minutes by rideshare over the bridge. The airport corridor and Seal Beach are 15-25 minutes. All workable; just don't pay a 'steps from the terminal' premium for the third group.
Check-out time vs your Carnival check-in window
An 11am check-out with a 1pm window means two hours with luggage. Look for noon check-out or a hotel that will hold bags and let you walk over later.
Breakfast that starts early and doesn't cost $25 a head
Downtown full-service hotels charge restaurant prices for breakfast. The airport-corridor and Seal Beach chains include it, which is worth $15-25 per person on a morning when you have nowhere else to be.
A plan for the car, if you have one
Downtown hotel parking is $25-45 a night and none of it is cruise-length. If you're driving, a night-before stay should come with cruise parking or you're paying the terminal lot anyway — see the free-parking and package pages.

Queensway Bay (Hotel Maya, Residence Inn, Queen Mary)
0.2-0.9 miles; walkable in 15-18 minutes from The Maya and the Residence Inn, and the Queen Mary is next door. Parking is paid nightly unless you buy a cruise package — the Queen Mary is quoted at $39 a night for guests, the Residence Inn at $38 (and $60-100 during special events), The Maya at $22. Best if you flew in, or if you buy the package.
Downtown / Pine Avenue / Ocean Boulevard
1.5-2 miles over the Queensway Bridge; 5-10 minutes by rideshare. Restaurants and bars at the door. Parking is paid — the Best Western Plus charges $15 a night, the Hyatt Regency rather more — and no downtown hotel runs a terminal shuttle.
Airport / Lakewood corridor
10-11 miles by road; 20-30 minutes. Chain hotels with big lots and the park-and-cruise packages — but check parking individually, because it is not uniformly free: the Long Beach Marriott parks guests free while the Courtyard charges about $20 a day. Breakfast is charged at all three (the Marriott's runs $22-33 a head), so 'included breakfast at most chains' does not hold here.
Seal Beach
8-9 miles; 20-30 minutes, and about 26 minutes to the terminal per one listing. Quieter, usually the cheapest rates, free parking and free breakfast at both hotels; a small beach town with a walkable Main Street. Neither property has a documented cruise-parking product, so treat the car as your problem.

5What to avoid
⚠️Arriving the same day on a morning flight into LAX. An hour's delay plus the 405 is a missed ship; the night-before room is your insurance.
⚠️Booking the hotel nearest the terminal without checking its parking price — the Queensway hotels charge nightly and don't hold cruise cars for free.
⚠️Destination and 'urban' fees. Several downtown Long Beach hotels add $20-35/night that doesn't show in the listed rate. Our real-price numbers include them.
⚠️Confusing the Queen Mary side of the bay with downtown on the map. They look adjacent; the bridge makes it a 1.5-mile walk.
