A week in San Antonio — a work assignment, a hospital stay, a family visit, a military move through Lackland — changes the maths. Eating out three times a day for seven days costs more than the room; a real kitchen and a nearby H-E-B fix that. The problem is that 'kitchenette' means anything from a two-burner cooktop with a full fridge and dishwasher to a bar fridge and a microwave on a shelf. And the cheapest nightly rate you see online is often beaten by a weekly rate that the same hotel does not bother to show you. San Antonio has extended-stay properties in every corridor; these are the ones with a real kitchen and a weekly rate worth asking for.

A real kitchen: cooktop, full-size fridge, and ideally a dishwasher
This is the distinction that decides the week. The Candlewood at the airport, Siegel Select on I-10 W and the Sonesta ES Suites all have a cooktop with a full-size fridge and a dishwasher; Home2's suites and the Baymont's 'kitchenette' rooms have a full fridge, microwave and (at Home2) a dishwasher but no burners. Decide whether you will actually cook or just reheat, and confirm which you are getting — the photos rarely make it clear.
The 7-night rate, asked for explicitly
Most extended-stay brands have rate breakpoints at 7 nights (and again around 30). The weekly rate often works out 15-30% under the nightly one, and it is frequently not shown on booking sites — call the property or book direct and ask.
Laundry on site and a grocery store within a short drive
Free guest laundry is standard at Candlewood, Staybridge and Home2 and saves packing a week of clothes. An H-E-B within five minutes turns the kitchen from a feature into a saving.
A clear housekeeping cadence
Extended-stay hotels usually clean weekly, not daily, on stays over a few nights. That is fine if you expect it; ask how to get fresh towels mid-week and whether daily service costs extra.

I-10 West / Medical Center (Siegel Select at 9350 I-10 W and Sonesta ES Suites on Spectrum One — both former IHG properties, so check recent reviews rather than the brand you remember), the airport corridor along Loop 410 and Portland Rd (Candlewood, Home2), and the west side near Lackland / SeaWorld. Downtown has very few true extended-stay hotels and they are priced accordingly.
