Someone you love is in University Hospital, Methodist or one of the UT Health clinics, and you need somewhere to sleep that is minutes away, cheap enough to hold for a week you cannot plan, and quiet enough to actually rest. The Medical Center district has dozens of hotels, which sounds reassuring until you notice the spread: the properties with 'Medical Center' in the name on the hospital side of Fredericksburg Road cost $60-80 more a night than identical chains five minutes up I-10 West. A fridge for leftovers and medication matters more than a pool. Hospital parking, contrary to the usual advice, is not the thing that will hurt you here — University Health's visitor garage caps at about $6 for a 24-hour stay — so choose on drive time, desk hours and the weekly rate instead. This is the practical shortlist.
2What you actually need
Under 10 minutes door to door, at any hour
You will be driving back and forth at odd times, sometimes in a hurry. The I-10 West / Wurzbach cluster is 5-8 minutes from University Hospital and Methodist; the Marriott Drive and Louis Pasteur properties are 2-5. Anything downtown is 20-30 minutes in traffic and not worth the River Walk views this week.
A 24-hour front desk
Calls from the hospital come at 2am. You want to be able to leave and come back without a locked lobby, and to check in at midnight if that is when you finally arrive. The Drury, the Courtyard, the Park Inn and the Sonesta ES Suites all list a 24-hour desk; Siegel Select is a weekly-stay property whose desk hours are more limited, so arrange any late arrival there in advance and confirm it directly.
Free parking, and a fridge or microwave
Free hotel parking is standard in this district and worth having, though the saving is smaller than people assume — University Health's visitor garage tops out at about $6 for 5-24 hours and sells families of inpatients a $10 pass good for 10 exits (confirm the current terms at the hospital). The bigger win is the room: a fridge holds leftovers, insulin and the food people keep bringing, and a microwave means you are not buying three meals a day in the hospital cafeteria. Note that the Sonesta ES Suites on Spectrum One now charges about $7 a night for parking, so check before you assume.
Flexibility on length of stay
Nobody knows if this is three nights or three weeks. Book refundable, ask for the weekly rate once you pass five nights, and ask the hospital's patient services or social work office whether it has a negotiated medical rate with nearby hotels — many do, and it is not advertised.

University Hospital (Level I trauma, 4502 Medical Dr), UT Health San Antonio (7703 Floyd Curl Dr), Methodist Hospital (7700 Floyd Curl Dr), Christus Santa Rosa and the Audie Murphy VA are all inside the South Texas Medical Center, roughly bounded by Fredericksburg Rd, Wurzbach Rd and Babcock Rd. Check which campus before booking — 'Methodist' alone can mean several buildings.

University Health's visitor garage, next to the Women's & Children's Hospital, is far cheaper than the district's reputation suggests: the first 30 minutes are free, then a sliding scale up to a $6 maximum for 5-24 hours, and families of inpatients can buy a $10 pass good for 10 exits at the Cashier's Office in the Rio Tower (weekday office hours — confirm before you go). Free parking is available at all University Health outpatient locations. Methodist runs free 24/7 valet at the 7700 Floyd Curl emergency entrance for ER visitors and registered handicap vehicles and does not publish its general garage rates. Free hotel parking still helps, but do not pay a 'Medical Center' premium on the assumption that hospital parking costs $25 a day — at University Hospital it does not.
Hotel clusters
Marriott Dr / Louis Pasteur Dr (inside the district, 2-5 min); I-10 West frontage road near Wurzbach (5-8 min, the biggest cluster and usually the best value); Fredericksburg Rd south of the district (5-10 min). Note that the I-10 West extended-stay pair has changed hands: 9350 I-10 W is now Siegel Select and 4320 Spectrum One is now a Sonesta ES Suites, so older reviews and older brand loyalty rates will not match what you get.

5What to avoid
⚠️Paying the 'Medical Center' premium by reflex. Unless minutes genuinely matter (ICU, a patient who cannot be left), a hotel 5 minutes up I-10 with free breakfast and parking will cost you $60-80 less a night with no practical downside.
⚠️Booking nightly for a stay that turns into two weeks. After five nights the weekly rate at an extended-stay property is almost always cheaper — ask for it explicitly, and re-book if you have to.
⚠️Assuming every hotel has a 24-hour desk. Several of the best long-stay hotels here have limited overnight staffing; if you expect midnight arrivals or departures, confirm the arrangement in advance.
⚠️Skipping the hospital's own resources. Patient services often has a list of hotels with medical rates and sometimes a shuttle; a two-minute call can save hundreds of dollars.
