Hotels near Northwestern Memorial Hospital for visiting families

Verification pending — confirm directly with the hotel

1The situation

Someone you love is at Northwestern Memorial in Streeterville — or at Lurie Children's next door, or across town at Rush or UIC in the Illinois Medical District — and you need a bed nearby for an open-ended number of nights. Northwestern sits one block off the Magnificent Mile, which means the hotels you can see from the ICU windows are $180-300 a night before a hotel tax that reached 19% downtown in May 2026, charge $50-75 for valet parking and tack on a 'destination fee'. Here is the part most people get backwards: the hospital's own garages are the cheap option, not the expensive one. Northwestern validates visitor parking at $15 for up to seven hours, which is a fraction of a hotel valet. So the plan is a room 5-15 minutes away — on foot from a limited-service chain in River North, or by car from the South Loop or Lincoln Park where parking is free or cheap — and the validated hospital garage for the hours you are actually at the bedside.

2What you actually need

  1. Minutes door-to-door at any hour, by foot or by car

Northwestern's main entrances are on Huron and Erie between St. Clair and Fairbanks. The Fairfield, Red Roof and Holiday Inn Express in River North are a 5-10 minute walk, which beats any car at 3am. If you are driving, the South Loop and Lincoln Park hotels below are 10-15 minutes outside rush hour via Lake Shore Drive — and 25-35 at 5pm.

  2. A genuinely 24-hour front desk

Hospital visits don't keep hotel hours. You may check in at midnight after a long day in the waiting room or need a new key at 5am. Confirm the desk is staffed overnight; the self-check-in properties in River North are not built for this.

  3. Parking that isn't $70 a night — and know what the hospital charges

Downtown valet runs $50-75 a night and the hospital's visitor garages are paid (multi-day passes and validation vary — ask at the information desk). If you have a car, a South Loop hotel with free or $15-25 parking and a 10-minute drive saves $300+ over a week. If you don't need the car, leave it at home: the Red Line and buses serve the campus.

  4. A fridge and microwave in the room

Hospital cafeterias close, you'll bring food back, and some medications need refrigeration. The Hilton Garden Inn, Homewood Suites and Residence Inn have both; the older River North budget hotels may not — ask for a room with a fridge when you book.

  5. Week-rate flexibility and the hospital's own hotel list

Many hospitals keep a list of nearby hotels offering a discounted 'medical rate' for patients' families. Ask Northwestern's or Lurie's patient services or social work office before booking — do not assume any specific hotel or rate. Ask the hotel whether you can extend night by night without re-booking at a higher price.

3The shortlist7 hotels, cheapest first

Each hotel is here because it meets the requirements above — not because of its star rating. Prices are nightly rates before tax for the default dates; volatile facts (shuttles, parking terms) are stated as what to confirm, not as promises.

4Practical logistics

Northwestern Memorial Hospital
251 E Huron St, Streeterville, one block east of Michigan Avenue. Feinberg and Galter pavilions face Huron; Prentice Women's Hospital is on Superior. Visitor parking is in three campus garages: Huron/St Clair at 222 E Huron St, the Lavin Pavilion garage at 259 E Erie St, and 321 E Ontario St. With validation the rate is $15 for up to seven hours. The ticket has to be validated every time you park — do it at the customer service desks on the first and second floors of the Feinberg and Galter pavilions before you leave the building. Elevator access in the southwest (St Clair) corner of the Huron garage is limited during renovation work; use the Superior Street corner instead.
Lurie Children's Hospital
225 E Chicago Ave, on the same Streeterville campus a block north of Northwestern. Same hotels apply; Lurie's family services office is the one to ask about hotel lists and the Ronald McDonald House nearby.
Rush and UIC (Illinois Medical District)
Rush University Medical Center (1620 W Harrison St) and UI Health (1740 W Taylor St) are 3 miles west of the Loop along the Eisenhower. Few hotels sit in the district itself; the Loop and South Loop hotels below are a 10-15 minute drive or a Blue Line ride (Illinois Medical District stop).
Drive time from the South Loop and Lincoln Park
10-15 minutes to Streeterville outside rush hour via Lake Shore Drive; allow 25-35 at peak. From the O'Hare and Midway clusters it is 30-60 minutes depending on traffic — too far for daily visits, but fine for a family flying in for one night.
Medical rates
Ask the hospital's patient services, social work or guest services team whether they keep a list of partner hotels. Rates and participating hotels change; confirm directly with the hotel and mention the hospital when you book.
Food near the campus
Streeterville has cafes and a Whole Foods (on Huron, near the hospital) and Michigan Avenue is a block away; after midnight it is delivery or the handful of 24-hour spots in River North.
Hotel tax and the new downtown surcharge
Chicago's hotel tax is 17.5% city, county and state combined — and since 1 May 2026 a further 1.5% Tourism Improvement District charge applies to hotels with 100 rooms or more in the downtown and near-side zip codes (60601-60607, 60609, 60610, 60611, 60612, 60615, 60616, 60653, 60654, 60661). That takes a downtown room to 19%, the highest hotel tax of any US city. The TID charge is legally the hotel's obligation, but hotels may pass it on and it must then be itemised separately on your receipt — so look for it as its own line, not folded into 'taxes and fees'. Two ways out: a hotel under 100 rooms, or an address outside the listed zips. Every hotel in the Rosemont, Des Plaines, Schiller Park, Bedford Park and Arlington Heights clusters is outside the City of Chicago altogether and pays neither.
The comparison that decides this page
A Streeterville hotel at $220 a night with $60 valet, taxed at 19%, is roughly $322 a day. A limited-service room seven minutes' walk away at $130 with the same tax, plus $15 of validated hospital parking on the days you drive, is about $170. Over a two-week stay that gap is more than $2,000 — and the walk is seven minutes.

Prices and schedules change. Treat figures as ranges and check before booking.

5What to avoid

  • The hotel 'on the hospital campus'. Around Northwestern that means a Streeterville rate of $180-300 plus $50-75 valet and a destination fee — routinely $100-150 a night more than a limited-service chain a 7-minute walk away.
  • Assuming the hospital garage is the expensive option and paying a hotel valet to avoid it. Northwestern validates at $15 for up to seven hours; downtown hotel valet is $50-75 a night. Park at the hospital and walk to the hotel, not the other way round.
  • Booking one night at a time on a booking site. Rates move daily; if you know you'll be here a week, ask the hotel directly for a weekly or medical rate and whether you can extend without re-booking.
  • Any week that overlaps Lollapalooza (late July/early August), the Air and Water Show (August), the Marathon (October) or a McCormick Place mega-show without checking the rate first — downtown doubles.
  • Self-check-in or app-only properties if you'll be coming and going at odd hours. Confirm a staffed overnight desk before you book.

6Book

Use the rate links on each hotel above. If a hotel's value depends on a named package (park & cruise, shuttle), confirm the package with the hotel before you pay — packages are usually direct-booking rate codes, not OTA rooms.
