You're in Chicago for a week or more — a work rotation, a hospital stay, a house-hunt, a gap between leases — and eating out three times a day in the Loop will cost more than the room. The difference between a real kitchen (two burners, a full-size fridge, a sink you can wash a pan in) and a 'kitchenette' (a mini-fridge and a microwave) is $30-50 a day in food. Chicago's extended-stay supply downtown is the Residence Inn/Homewood tier at $140-220 after a tax that reached 19% downtown in May 2026, which looks expensive until you price a week of restaurant meals and notice the included breakfast and the weekly rate you have to ask for. Below that are the hostels with a proper shared kitchen at $40-50 a night, and out by the airports the Candlewood/Extended Stay America tier at $90-120. The 17.4% hotel tax is the other reason to ask about the 30-night breakpoint if your stay runs long.
2What you actually need
A real kitchen, not a 'kitchenette'
Ask specifically: how many burners, how big is the fridge, is there cookware. Residence Inn and Homewood Suites rooms have a two-burner cooktop, full fridge, dishwasher and cookware; 'microwave and fridge' at a standard chain is a kitchenette in name only. Hostel kitchens are shared but full-size.
The 7-night rate, asked for by name
Extended-stay brands price in breakpoints: nightly, 7+ nights, 30+ nights. The 7-night rate is often 15-30% under the nightly rate and rarely shows on booking sites. Call the property, say how many nights, and ask for the weekly rate.
Parking priced for a week, or no car at all
Downtown self-parking is $40-70 a night and over a week dwarfs the food savings. Either pick a property with free or flat-rate parking (South Loop, O'Hare, Midway) or come without a car — the L and buses cover most of what a week needs.
Housekeeping cadence you can live with
Budget extended-stays clean weekly by default with towel swaps on request; the Marriott/Hilton tier usually cleans every few days. Ask, and ask what a mid-week clean costs if the default bothers you.
On-site laundry and a grocery store within walking distance
A week means laundry; in-building machines turn a $20 laundromat trip into $5. A kitchen is only a saving if you stock it — Jewel-Osco, Mariano's, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods all have downtown stores; check the map before booking, not after.

Hotel tax on long stays
Chicago's hotel tax is 17.5% city, county and state combined — and since 1 May 2026 a further 1.5% Tourism Improvement District charge applies to hotels with 100 rooms or more in the downtown and near-side zip codes (60601-60607, 60609, 60610, 60611, 60612, 60615, 60616, 60653, 60654, 60661). That takes a downtown room to 19%, the highest hotel tax of any US city. The TID charge is legally the hotel's obligation, but hotels may pass it on and it must then be itemised separately on your receipt — so look for it as its own line, not folded into 'taxes and fees'. Two ways out: a hotel under 100 rooms, or an address outside the listed zips. Every hotel in the Rosemont, Des Plaines, Schiller Park, Bedford Park and Arlington Heights clusters is outside the City of Chicago altogether and pays neither. Stays of 30 or more consecutive nights are generally treated differently for tax, and the TID charge applies only to short-term stays under 30 days — that does not help a one-week stay but it matters a lot at a month. Ask the hotel how they handle the changeover.
Housekeeping
Residence Inn and Homewood generally clean every few days; budget extended-stay brands and hostels clean weekly or not at all in private rooms. Confirm the cadence and any charge for extra service directly with the hotel.
Grocery downtown
Jewel-Osco (State Street in the Loop, Roosevelt in the South Loop), Mariano's (Lakeshore East, South Loop), Trader Joe's (River North), Whole Foods (Streeterville). Most hotels below are within a 10-minute walk of one.
Parking for a week
Downtown hotel self-parking is typically $40-70 a night; the South Loop and airport-cluster properties are free or flat-rate. Over seven nights that is the single biggest line item after the room — check before booking.

5What to avoid
⚠️A cheaper nightly rate at a standard hotel that loses to the extended-stay weekly rate after four or five nights once you add food. Do the maths for the whole week, room plus meals plus parking.
⚠️'Kitchenette' in a listing without checking what it means. At many downtown chains it is a mini-fridge and a microwave. Ask for burners.
⚠️Booking seven separate nights on a booking site. You'll pay the nightly rate and may be moved rooms mid-stay. Call the hotel and book the week as one reservation.
⚠️Bringing a car downtown for a week without a parking plan. $50 a night for seven nights is $350 — more than the food you were saving, and more than a week in O'Hare economy parking at $15 a day.
⚠️Any week overlapping Lollapalooza, the Air and Water Show or a big McCormick Place show. Extended-stay rates spike like everything else; book early and lock the rate.
