1The situation
Most Chicago hotels will take your dog — for a fee, and the fee is the problem. '$25 pet fee' on a listing is often $25 per night, per pet, which turns a $99 room into $149 and a week into an extra $175; some downtown properties charge $50-75 per stay on top. The harder problem in 2026 is that the shortcut everyone used to give — 'just book a Kimpton, a Red Roof or a La Quinta' — has largely stopped working in this city. Three of the properties that used to take pets free downtown now charge: the Red Roof Inn on Ontario relaunched as The St. Clair Hotel and charges $50 a stay for one pet up to 40 lbs; the La Quinta on Franklin charges $25 a night up to $75; and the Kimpton Allegro was bought by Sonesta and charges $75 a stay. What is left is a short, specific list: one surviving Kimpton, one rebranded boutique that kept its policy through the handover, and the two budget chains near O'Hare whose brand policies still hold. Every one of the four below has been checked this year, and every one still needs a phone call, because a policy that survived one rebrand can be dropped at the next.
2What you actually need
The fee structure in plain words: per night, per stay, or none — and per pet
'Pet fee $25' tells you nothing. Ask: is it per night or per stay, per pet or per room, and is any of it refundable? Write the answer down with the name of the person who told you.
Weight and number limits
Red Roof and La Quinta franchises usually allow one or two pets per room and some cap weight at 50-80 lb. Kimpton historically has no limits. Two dogs or a big dog can mean a second room or a fee elsewhere.
A realistic plan for three walks a day
Downtown Chicago means elevators and a lobby every time the dog needs to go out. Pick a hotel a block or two from a park or the lakefront — Lake Shore Park and Olive Park in Streeterville, Grant Park in the Loop and South Loop — or stay in Lincoln Park/Lakeview where the street itself works.
The house rules on leaving the dog alone
Several hotels prohibit unattended pets in rooms or require a crate; barking complaints get you asked to leave. Ask before you book if you'll be out for the day.

Red Roof still runs its one-free-pet policy here — one pet up to 80 lbs at no charge, with a grassy relief area on site — but read the second half before you book: a second pet is $15 a night, capped at $105 a stay. So it is free for one dog and about the same as anywhere else for two. Pets may not be left unattended. Be honest about the geography too: at 22 W Algonquin Road this is 9 miles northwest of O'Hare, further out than every other hotel on this page, and 25 miles from downtown. It earns its place on the pet policy and the price, not the location.

Motel 6's brand policy is the most straightforward in the country: two pets of any size, no fee, no breed restriction. This location runs it, has a 24-hour desk and free self-parking, and sits in Schiller Park — outside the Chicago city limits, so no 17.5% Chicago hotel tax and no TID surcharge either. The trade is that it is a Motel 6 15 miles from downtown, and there is grass but no dog park within walking distance. If your reason for coming to Chicago is not downtown, this is the cheapest way to travel with two dogs in the metro area.

Kimpton: no pet fee, no size or breed limit, brand standard is up to two pets per room — the Gray in the Loop still runs it. Motel 6: two pets of any size, no fee, no breed restriction. Red Roof: one pet up to 80 lbs free, a second is $15 a night capped at $105 a stay. La Quinta: no longer free at the Chicago downtown location — $25 a night, capped at $75, up to two pets of 75 lbs or less.
The three that used to be free and are not
The St. Clair Hotel - Magnificent Mile, 162 E Ontario (the former Red Roof Inn Chicago Downtown): $50 per stay, one pet, 40 lb limit, designated rooms only, pets may not be left unattended. La Quinta Inn & Suites Chicago Downtown, 1 S Franklin: $25 per night, $75 cap. The Allegro Royal Sonesta Chicago Loop, 171 W Randolph (the former Kimpton Hotel Allegro): $75 per stay for two pets, plus a $32 nightly destination fee and $63 valet. If a listing or an older guide still shows any of these as free, it is out of date.
The pet fee is rarely the biggest number
Downtown valet is $50-75 a night and the hotel tax reached 19% in the downtown zip codes in May 2026. A $25 pet fee at a South Loop hotel with free parking beats a no-fee downtown boutique with $63 valet by about $40 a night. Price the whole bill — room, tax, parking, pet — not the pet line.
Dog parks and lakefront
Lake Shore Park and Olive Park in Streeterville, Grant Park and the lakefront trail from the Loop, Montrose Dog Beach and Wiggly Field in Lakeview/Lincoln Park. Chicago's official dog-friendly areas require a city tag in principle — check the rules for the one nearest you. Near the O'Hare cluster there is grass but no dog park within walking distance; the Red Roof in Arlington Heights has its own relief area and a picnic lawn.
Vets and emergency
Chicago has several 24-hour emergency veterinary hospitals, including in the West Loop and Lincoln Park. Save one in your phone before you need it.
Damage deposits
Even no-fee hotels may hold a card authorisation against damage. Ask whether there is a hold and when it is released.

5What to avoid
⚠️A '$25 pet fee' that is per night per pet. Over a week with two dogs that is $350 — more than the room at some of these hotels.
⚠️Trusting a brand rule instead of the property. In Chicago the brand shortcut has broken three times over: a Red Roof that now charges $50, a La Quinta that now charges $25 a night, and a Kimpton that was sold to Sonesta and charges $75. Check the property, not the logo.
⚠️Booking a 'pet-friendly' listing on a booking site and assuming the fee is the one on the page. Fees are usually collected at the hotel and the listing is often out of date. Call.
⚠️Leaving the dog alone in the room for hours without asking first. Several of these properties prohibit unattended pets outright.
⚠️Forgetting the parking and tax lines. A no-fee pet policy at a downtown hotel with $63 valet and 19% tax is not cheaper than a $25 pet fee at a suburban hotel with free parking and no Chicago hotel tax at all.
