Hotels for a very early flight from Houston IAH or Hobby

1The situation

Houston has two commercial airports on opposite sides of the city, about 30 miles and 45 minutes apart, so the first thing to get right is which one. Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is 23 miles north, with a large hotel strip along John F Kennedy Boulevard and Beltway 8 two to four miles out. Hobby (HOU) is 11 miles south-east, Southwest's Houston base, with a tighter cluster on Airport Boulevard and the Gulf Freeway barely a mile from the terminal. Hobby's hotels are closer, which for a dawn departure is worth real money: at under a mile, a rideshare rescues a missed shuttle for $12-15. At IAH you are three miles out and the shuttle matters more. Confirm the first run for your date before you book anything on the strength of it.

2What you actually need

  1. The right airport, checked on your booking

IAH and Hobby are 30 miles and about 45 minutes apart on opposite sides of Houston, and a hotel booked for one is useless for the other at 4am. Southwest dominates Hobby; most other carriers use IAH. Check the airport code on your reservation before you book a room.

  2. A first shuttle departure earlier than your check-in deadline

Work backwards: flight time, minus 90 minutes at the terminal (IAH is a big airport and its security lines behave like one), minus 10-20 minutes on the shuttle. If the hotel's first run is later than that, the free shuttle is worth nothing to you. Get the time in writing.

  3. A rideshare that can rescue the morning

From the Hobby cluster at under a mile that is a $12-15 fix. From the IAH strip at three miles it is $15-25. From Humble at four and a half miles it is more, and slower. Distance from the terminal is really a measure of how recoverable a mistake is.

  4. Something to eat before breakfast opens

Most hot breakfasts start between 6 and 7am, after you have gone. Ask whether the hotel does a grab-and-go bag for early departures and confirm it the night before rather than hoping.

3The shortlist4 hotels, cheapest first

Each hotel is here because it meets the requirements above — not because of its star rating. Prices are nightly rates before tax for the default dates; volatile facts (shuttles, parking terms) are stated as what to confirm, not as promises.

Two miles from IAH with a shuttle that starts at 5:00am and runs every half hour — the most frequent morning service on the strip. For a 7am departure that works. For a 6am flight it does not: you need to be at the terminal by 4:30 and the van is not running, so budget a rideshare of about $15-25.

On the JFK Boulevard strip with a shuttle from 5am, arranged by phone rather than a fixed loop. Fine for a 7am departure if you ring the night before; not an option for anything earlier, where a rideshare of about $15-25 is the answer.

The Hobby answer, and the only one on this page: a free shuttle listed 5:00am to 11:30pm every 30 minutes, a mile from the terminal. Same 5am wall as the IAH hotels, but at Hobby that matters less — the ride is five minutes and $12-15, so a 6am flight is easy even before the van starts.

The longest confirmed shuttle window near IAH: 5:00am to 11:30pm, every half hour, seven days. That still means a 6am flight is a rideshare — nothing here runs before five — but for a 7am or later departure it is the most dependable van on the strip.

4Practical logistics

George Bush Intercontinental (IAH)
About 23 miles north of downtown Houston. Five terminals connected by the Skyway and Subway trains. The hotel strip runs along John F Kennedy Boulevard and Beltway 8, two to four miles from the terminals, with a further cluster in Humble. No hotel is walkable.
William P. Hobby (HOU)
About 11 miles south-east of downtown and Southwest Airlines' Houston base. The hotel cluster on Airport Boulevard, Mosley Road and the Gulf Freeway sits within about a mile and a half — the closest airport hotels in the city.
IAH parking
IAH's ecopark lots are the cheap on-airport option at roughly **$6.47 a day uncovered and $8.31 covered**, with a free shuttle to all five terminals — so a week is about $45-58. Terminal garages cost considerably more. Rates change; confirm on the Houston Airport System's parking page before you book.
Hobby parking
Hobby's terminal garage is about **$24 a day** — expensive — but its ecopark economy lot runs roughly **$7-10 a day** with a free shuttle to the terminal, so a week is about $50-70. The gap between the two is large enough to be worth the extra ten minutes. Confirm current rates before booking.
Shuttles: the 5am wall
Every hotel on both strips advertises a free shuttle, and we checked the hours. **The earliest confirmed first run at either airport is 5:00am** — Fairfield IAH 5:00am-11:30pm every 30 min, Comfort Suites IAH 5:00-11:30am, La Quinta IAH from 5am by phone, and at Hobby the Best Western Plus 5:00am-11:30pm every 30 min. Nothing runs earlier anywhere. The difference is the distance: from the IAH strip a pre-5am departure is a $15-25 rideshare, while Hobby's hotels are a mile out and $12-15, so an early Hobby flight barely notices the gap. From 7am the shuttles work well at both.

Prices and schedules change. Treat figures as ranges and check before booking.

5What to avoid

  • Booking on the strength of 'free airport shuttle' without asking for the first run. At IAH the earliest confirmed is 5:00am, which does not reach a 6am flight.
  • Assuming Hobby works like IAH. Only one Hobby hotel here has a confirmable airport shuttle — Marriott lists none for either its Four Points or its SpringHill — but Hobby's cluster is a mile out, so the taxi fallback is cheap.
  • Booking an IAH hotel for a Hobby flight, or the reverse. They are 30 miles apart and the cross-town ride before dawn costs more than the room saved.
  • Assuming breakfast will be open. On a 6am flight it will not be; ask for a grab-and-go bag the night before.

6Book

Use the rate links on each hotel above. If a hotel's value depends on a named package (park & cruise, shuttle), confirm the package with the hotel before you pay — packages are usually direct-booking rate codes, not OTA rooms.
