Hotels near the Texas Medical Center for patients and families

1The situation

Someone you love is being treated at MD Anderson, Houston Methodist, Texas Children's or one of the other institutions in the Texas Medical Center, and you need a bed for an open-ended number of nights. The TMC is the largest medical complex in the world and it has a hotel market to match — which means both that there is plenty of choice and that the choice is expensive. Three things will save you real money here, and none of them is obvious. First, **ask for the medical rate**: MD Anderson says outright that many TMC hotels offer one for patients and families, and it is generally not volunteered. Second, **look at the parking line, not just the room rate** — the full-service hotels within a few hundred yards of the campus charge $15 to $35 a night to park, which over a fortnight can exceed the difference in room rates. Third, if the stay is measured in weeks rather than nights, a kitchen a mile out will beat a room next door.

2What you actually need

  1. The medical rate — asked for by name

MD Anderson states that 'many local hotels in the Texas Medical Center offer a medical rate for patients and their families. This is usually lower than the standard rate.' It is not shown on booking sites and it is generally not offered unless you ask. Call the hotel directly, mention the hospital, and be ready to show proof of patient status — some properties ask.

  2. The parking charge, read before the room rate

This is where the Medical Center quietly takes your money. The hotels closest to the campus charge $15-35 a night to park; the SureStay Plus on Main Street parks free, and the Hampton on Old Spanish Trail is about $6. Over fourteen nights the difference between free and $35 is nearly $500 — more than most of the gaps in room rate.

  3. A kitchen, if the stay might run to weeks

Treatment schedules slip. A studio with a cooktop and a full-size fridge a mile from the campus costs less than a room next door and turns three meals out a day into groceries. It also solves the practical problem of a patient who can only eat certain things at certain times.

  4. A way to the campus that isn't the garage

The TMC garages run to about $19 for 24 hours, and a pre-paid Value Pass discounts that with in-and-out privileges for repeat visits. Better still, one hotel on this shortlist runs a free TMC shuttle. Ask about both before you assume you will be paying to park every day.

3The shortlist5 hotels, cheapest first

Each hotel is here because it meets the requirements above — not because of its star rating. Prices are nightly rates before tax for the default dates; volatile facts (shuttles, parking terms) are stated as what to confirm, not as promises.

4Practical logistics

The Texas Medical Center
The largest medical complex in the world, about six miles south of downtown Houston, bounded roughly by Holcombe Boulevard, Main Street and Braeswood. MD Anderson, Houston Methodist, Texas Children's, Memorial Hermann and Baylor St. Luke's all sit within it. Check which institution and which building before you book — the campus is enormous and 'the Medical Center' covers a lot of ground. METRORail's Red Line runs along Fannin through the middle of it.
Medical rates and lodging help
Ask for the **medical rate**. MD Anderson states plainly that 'many local hotels in the Texas Medical Center offer a medical rate for patients and their families. This is usually lower than the standard rate' — and it is generally not offered unless you ask, and not shown on booking sites. Mention the hospital when you call. MD Anderson also points families to **Joe's House** (joeshouse.org), a national lodging directory for patients travelling for treatment, and its Patient Travel Services line is 888-848-9992. Confirm any rate directly with the hotel; some will ask for proof of patient status.
Parking at the Medical Center
Texas Medical Center garages charge up to about **$19 for 24 hours** — Garage 2 runs from $5 for an hour to $19 for a full day, and Garage 10 connects to MD Anderson's main building by sky bridge. Valet is a **$20 flat fee**, 5am to 11pm Monday to Friday. The thing most families miss: TMC sells **pre-paid Value Passes** at a discount with in-and-out privileges, which is what you want for several consecutive days or repeated visits. Ask at the garage or call the TMC parking line on 713-791-6161, and confirm current rates.
MD Anderson's own hotel
The Jesse H. Jones Rotary House International at 1600 Holcombe Blvd is owned by MD Anderson and managed by Marriott, exclusively for its patients and their families, and is connected to the institution by an **enclosed skybridge**. Around $146 and up. It is not cheap, but for a patient in treatment the covered walk is worth more than the saving. Reservations on 1-877-632-6789.
Peak weeks to avoid if you can
MD Anderson's own lodging list flags the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (roughly late February to March) and the Offshore Technology Conference (May) as periods when medical rates may be blacked out and hotels fill. If your treatment dates are flexible around those weeks, move them; if not, book early.

Prices and schedules change. Treat figures as ranges and check before booking.

5What to avoid

  • Booking a Medical Center hotel without asking about the medical rate. MD Anderson says most of them have one, and none of them will offer it unprompted.
  • Comparing room rates while ignoring parking. $15-35 a night to park at the closest hotels is often the largest line on the bill after the room.
  • Paying the TMC garage day rate for a two-week stay without asking about a pre-paid Value Pass, which discounts it and adds in-and-out privileges.
  • Booking nightly for a stay that becomes a month. Past 30 consecutive nights Texas drops the state hotel occupancy tax — ask the hotel how they apply it.
  • Assuming the cheapest room is the cheapest stay. A kitchen a mile out usually beats a room next door once you have eaten fourteen dinners.

6Book

Use the rate links on each hotel above. If a hotel's value depends on a named package (park & cruise, shuttle), confirm the package with the hotel before you pay — packages are usually direct-booking rate codes, not OTA rooms.
