1The situation
You're flying into MIA, or you've left the car at the hotel and need to get to Dodge Island without it. The honest position: in the airport cluster the port shuttle is almost always a paid, scheduled, book-ahead service rather than a courtesy van, and the return leg is the part that catches people out. Red Roof's transfer is $12 a head and explicitly one-way. The Hampton includes two people each way in its package but states it does not run pier-to-hotel or pier-to-airport transport. Holiday Inn charges $15 a head, hourly, paid to the driver. Departure windows are narrow — Red Roof's are 10:15, 11:15 and 12:15 — so your cruise line's arrival window has to fit them. Downtown, nobody runs a shuttle because nobody needs one: it is a $10-15 rideshare over Port Boulevard.
2What you actually need
A port shuttle, not an airport shuttle
Nearly every airport-area hotel runs a free MIA shuttle. Far fewer run one to PortMiami, and some only do it as a paid add-on. Ask specifically: 'Do you run a shuttle to the cruise port, and what does it cost?'
Departure times that match your cruise line's arrival window
Boarding windows are assigned by the cruise line and usually fall late morning to mid-afternoon. A single scheduled run that leaves well before your window means hours outside the terminal with luggage.
Whether seats are reserved per cabin or first-come
Saturday is a multi-ship day at PortMiami. Hotel vans fill. Reserve at booking and get it in the confirmation email.
Which terminal the shuttle drops at
PortMiami's terminals are spread along Dodge Island and are not all walkable from each other with bags. Give the hotel your ship name and terminal letter when you reserve.
3The shortlist6 hotels, cheapest first
Each hotel is here because it meets the requirements above — not because of its star rating. Prices are nightly rates before tax for the default dates; volatile facts (shuttles, parking terms) are stated as what to confirm, not as promises.

A real, priced port transfer — **$12 per person**, departing 10:15, 11:15 and 12:15 — but it is **one-way only** and must be arranged by the date of check-in through Doral Transportation on 305-406-2036, not the front desk. If your ship's arrival window does not fit those three departures, or you need a return, budget a $25-35 rideshare.

The port shuttle comes with the package and is separate from the free MIA airport shuttle. Read the small print: the hotel states it does **not** provide a transfer from the pier back to the hotel or from the pier to the airport, and cruise transfers must be signed up for at check-in. One guest report also describes paying $10 to return. Get the outbound time in writing and plan the return yourself.

1-3 miles via Port Boulevard; 5-10 minutes by rideshare, typically $10-15. No downtown hotel runs a port shuttle, and none needs to. Walking is possible from the Biscayne Boulevard hotels nearest the bridge but it's a mile-plus with luggage in heat.
Airport area to PortMiami
8-10 miles; 15-20 minutes. Port shuttles here are scheduled, paid and usually must be booked by check-in — $12-15 per person is the going rate, and several hotels run outbound only. Confirm the price per person, the departure time and whether a return leg exists before you rely on one.
Miami Beach to PortMiami
4-6 miles via the MacArthur Causeway; 15-25 minutes. Almost no Beach hotels run a port shuttle; plan on a $15-25 rideshare.
MIA to PortMiami direct
About 9 miles; rideshare $20-35, or your cruise line's paid transfer. If you're only in Miami for the night this ride is the whole logistics problem.
Prices and schedules change. Treat figures as ranges and check before booking.
5What to avoid
⚠️Booking a 'shuttle hotel' without a written departure time. If the confirmation email doesn't name the time, you don't have a shuttle.
⚠️Mistaking the free MIA airport shuttle for a port shuttle — they are different vans with different schedules, and the airport one will not take you to Dodge Island.
⚠️Relying on any shuttle on a multi-ship Saturday without a rideshare plan B and a buffer of at least an hour.
⚠️Paying a 'near the port' premium for a Miami Beach hotel that is 25 minutes and a causeway away on embarkation morning.

Use the rate links on each hotel above. If a hotel's value depends on a named package (park & cruise, shuttle), confirm the package with the hotel before you pay — packages are usually direct-booking rate codes, not OTA rooms.
