Where to stay the night before a cruise from Galveston

1The situation
Every cruise line's advice is the same: arrive the day before. Galveston is 1-1.5 hours from either Houston airport and I-45 closes or crawls often enough that same-day arrival is a genuine risk. So you need one night, close to the terminal, where check-out time and the morning routine fit an 11am-3pm embarkation. Early check-in doesn't matter. A late-ish check-out, luggage storage, and an easy run to Harborside do.
2What you actually need
Distance to Harborside Drive, in minutes not miles
Anything on the Strand or the east end of Seawall is 5-10 minutes. The west end of Seawall and the 61st Street corridor are 10-20 minutes. Both are fine; just don't pay a 'near the terminal' premium for the second group.
Check-out time vs your embarkation window
An 11am check-out with a 1pm arrival window means two hours with luggage. Look for noon check-out, or a hotel that will hold bags and run a later shuttle.
Breakfast that starts early enough and doesn't cost $20 a head
Included breakfast is worth $10-20 per person on a morning when you have nowhere else to be. On the Strand there are good cafés; on the west end there aren't.
A plan for the car (if you have one)
If you're driving, a night-before stay should come with cruise parking or you're paying for the port lot anyway. See the free-parking and park-and-cruise pages.

Walkable to the terminals (0.2-0.5 mile). Paid or valet parking: $15/night at Harbor House, $36+tax valet at the Tremont.
East Seawall (1st-40th St)
1.5-2 miles; 5-10 minutes by rideshare. Mix of beachfront chains and older motels; parking is free at some (Best Western) and paid at others (Wingate, ~$15/day).
61st Street corridor
3-4 miles; 10-15 minutes. Chain hotels with big lots — but as of our check only Candlewood offers paid extended parking; the Hampton Inn does not hold cruise cars.
West Seawall (Moody Gardens and beyond)
4-6 miles; 15-20 minutes. Moody Gardens' Stay, Park & Sail package is the exception that makes the west end work for cruisers.
Prices and schedules change. Treat figures as ranges and check before booking.
5What to avoid
⚠️Booking the hotel nearest the terminal assuming parking is included — the Strand hotels charge for parking ($15-46/night), though the Tremont's $160 cruise-parking deal beats the port garage for a week.
⚠️Arriving the same day from a morning flight into IAH. If the flight is late by an hour you miss the ship; the night-before room is your insurance.
⚠️Resort fees. Several Seawall hotels add $15-30/night 'amenity' fees that don't show in the listing price. Our real-price numbers include them.
⚠️Checking in late and expecting the shuttle to be available the next morning without having reserved it.
6Book
Use the rate links on each hotel above. If a hotel's value depends on a named package (park & cruise, shuttle), confirm the package with the hotel before you pay — packages are usually direct-booking rate codes, not OTA rooms.
