1The situation
Every cruise line says arrive the day before, and for Seattle it is more than boilerplate: most Alaska passengers fly in from the East Coast or overseas, and a delayed morning flight into SeaTac is the most common way to miss a ship. You need one night, close to the right pier, where check-out and the morning routine fit a late-morning-to-afternoon embarkation. Early check-in doesn't matter; luggage storage, a simple run to the pier and a breakfast you don't have to hunt for do. The summer-season problem is price: Seattle hotel rates peak in exactly the months the ships sail, so the 'night before' room is often the most expensive night of the whole trip.
2What you actually need
The right pier, then the right neighbourhood
Sailing from Pier 66 (Norwegian, Oceania): Belltown or the waterfront, and walk. Sailing from Pier 91 (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival, Holland America, Princess): Queen Anne or lower Belltown for a short ride, or an airport hotel with a confirmed cruise shuttle. Booking a waterfront hotel for a Pier 91 sailing buys you a view and a $25 ride.
Check-out time vs your embarkation window
An 11am check-out with a 1pm arrival window means two hours with luggage. Look for noon check-out or a hotel that will hold bags, and confirm directly with the hotel.
Breakfast that is included or walkable
Belltown and Queen Anne have cafés on every block; SeaTac's International Boulevard does not. Included breakfast is worth $15-25 a head in Seattle.
A plan for the car, if you have one

The Pier 66 hotel: cross Alaskan Way with your luggage in the morning. Worth the premium only if your ship actually uses Pier 66 — that means Norwegian, Oceania or most Cunard Queen Elizabeth calls. Everything else, including Carnival, Celebrity, Holland America, MSC, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Virgin, sails from Pier 91, three miles north, and this becomes a 15-20 minute embarkation-morning ride.

2-3 miles to Pier 91, 1-1.5 miles to Pier 66. 10-15 minutes by car to either. Chain hotels with breakfast; parking still paid at most.
SeaTac airport
15-18 miles from both piers; 30-60 minutes. Cheapest rooms, free or cheap parking, and the only park-and-cruise packages — the DoubleTree's works out around $14 a night for parking. Only makes sense if you have booked the transfer: Seattle Express runs five departures between 9:00am and 12:15pm and nothing after, so a late-afternoon check-in window means a $75-130 private car or a long rideshare.
SeaTac to downtown without a car
Link light rail to Westlake, about 40 minutes, a few dollars per person. Rideshare $45-70.

5What to avoid
⚠️Booking the closest hotel to 'the cruise terminal' on a map without checking which terminal — the Pier 66 hotels are 3 miles and a 20-minute embarkation-morning drive from Pier 91.
⚠️Arriving the same day on a morning flight. A two-hour delay into SeaTac means missing the ship; the night-before room is your insurance.
⚠️Destination and amenity fees. Several downtown Seattle hotels add $20-35 per night that isn't in the listed rate. Our real-price numbers include them.
⚠️Paying a waterfront premium for a view you'll see from the ship in the morning anyway. A Queen Anne or Belltown chain hotel with breakfast does the job for $60-100 less.
